Travel in London

London’s extensive transport network will get you to your destination quickly and efficiently.

Planning your journey
Take the guesswork out of travelling around the capital and use the Journey Planner on the Transport for London website tfl.gov.uk. Simply enter your travel details and the Planner will tell you the quickest way to get there.

Smart ticket
The Oyster card is a contactless smart card, which is valid across the whole of London’s public transport network. Users add credit to the card, then ‘touch in’ by tapping it on the electronic reader at the start of a journey and ‘touching out’ at the end of the journey. Delegates with a contactless debit or credit card can now also use this instead of the Oyster card, across the bus and underground networks in London.

Rail
Undergound, Overground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and Crossrail London Underground, or the Tube as it is known locally, celebrated its 150-year anniversary in 2013 and carried 1.23 billion passengers. Its 11 lines reach every corner of the city, and is the quickest way to get around London. The Overground travels above ground, interconnects with the Tube and stretches beyond central London.

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is an automated, driverless service that opened in 1987. It links the regenerated Docklands area, Canary Wharf and City Airport London, with central London.

Red London double-decker buses are a great way to get around London at street level. You’ll find bus stops with detailed bus routes and maps dotted along most of London’s streets. Look out for the new Routemaster Bus, which was created by leading English designer, Thomas Heatherwick. London’s famous black taxis, or ‘cabs’, can be hailed on the street for metered fares, or booked in advance for fixed prices. Trustworthy and reliable, the drivers have all passed ‘The Knowledge’, a gruelling examination that tests their geography of London Streets.

Santander Cycle Hire bikes are London’s cycle sharing scheme, enabling you to hire one of 10,000 bikes and pedal around the city. Users pick up and return bikes at 700 docking stations in convenient locations.

River
River bus and cable car The Thames Clipper is a fast and frequent catamaran river bus service that picks up and drops off at piers along the Thames. It’s a fantastic way to get from A to B, and see London’s sites at the same time. Westminster Pier is less than a 10-minute walk from the QEII centre.
